Texts in Context: Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahamsa Yogananda

Autobiography of a Yogi, first published by Paramahamsa Yogananda in 1946, was probably the first book on yoga that I read maybe 30 years ago. I was entranced. When I returned to the text 10 years ago as the potential subject of a book club I couldn’t get through the first two pages. But now, having recently visited the spot where Yogananda wrote the book in Encinitas, California, it’s time to return. Please join me for this first book club where we will read and discuss this fascinating book.
In Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramahamsa Yoganananda offers an enticing spiritual narrative of his personal spiritual quest with saints, yogis and spiritual masters in India. He combines this narrative of Indian mysticism with a reverence for science and Christianity. The story opens a window into spiritual traditions in the early twentieth century and inspired thousands to undertake spiritual journeys.
