What and where is yoga? Yoga originates in India, its practice starting ‘with the very dawn of civilization’, according to the Indian Government (Basavardaddi 2015). Yet yoga has travelled geographically and historically over the last two and a half thousand years, morphing its meaning in encounters with different thinkers, practitioners, and religious and cultural movements. The term ‘yoga’ defies essentialist definitions and linear trajectories, while at the same time being drawn upon to promote varied philosophies, lifestyles and politics. In this presentation yoga studies scholar Dr Ruth Westoby discusses the many contexts and meanings of yoga, sketching its developments in India, the diaspora, and ‘glocal’ (global and local) contexts and in particular in the UK. Instead of an essentialist definition she situates what yoga has meant in different historical and geographical contexts. Rather than a linear trajectory she identifies interactive encounters between yoga and coloniality, yoga and esotericism, and yoga and modernity to illustrate the many contexts of yoga travelling and yoga landing.
