Concepts in Context: The Yogasūtra of Patañjali

The Yogasūtra of Patañjali is an iconic text in the history of yoga. Sometimes referred to as the Pātañjalayogaśāstra this 4th to 5th century CE text is a systematic explanation of the metaphysical school of sāṃkhya from a practical perspective. It contains key teachings on the eight limbs of yoga (including morality, posture and breathing), stages of meditation, and superhuman capabilities. If you have a practice of yoga or meditation your practice is informed by this text.
This four week course gives an overview of the text, introduces the key teachings of the Yogasūtra and gives the historical and contemporary reception of this important text. This course is intended for those new to the historical and philosophical study of yoga while also providing analysis and readings for those more familiar with this text. All are welcome.
The course is delivered live online over four weeks through zoom. The live sessions are complemented with introductory pre-recorded lectures of between 20 and 40 minutes and suggested readings. Slides and further readings will also be made available. The sessions will be recorded and available for registered participants to review for 30 days after the sessions. The recordings are not downloadable and will not be for sale after the live iteration of the course.
Please pay what you can afford for this course based on your personal circumstances. As a guide, similar courses are priced around £80 to £120 - but less or more might be right for you. Enrolments are capped to ensure everyone can talk and be heard.
